Family Harm

Use this report to advise Police of Family Harm.

What is Family Harm?

Family harm is the damage caused by adverse circumstances, vulnerabilities and/or negative behaviours that often lead to long-term negative consequences.

Family violence is violence used against a person that is, or has been, in a family relationship (partners, ex-partners or family members).

Violence means:

  • physical abuse
  • sexual abuse
  • psychological abuse

Violence includes a pattern of behaviour and may include:

  • Coercive behaviour:
    • violence – assaults, strangulation, sexual violence, etc.
    • intimidation – threats, jealousy, surveillance, stalking and destruction of property. Includes violence directed at children and pets/animals.
  • Control tactics:
    • violence – assaults, strangulation, sexual violence.
    • intimidation – threats, jealousy, surveillance, stalking and destruction of property.
    • Includes violence directed at children and pets/animals.

These tactics adversely impact every aspect of victims’ (and their children’s) lives, including their health, their dignity, and their opportunities to build safe, viable, and fulfilling lives.

Different types of family harm and relationships:

  • Teen dating/teen harm
  • Elder abuse
  • Honour based harm/violence
  • Disabled women
  • Rainbow/ takatāpui (especially people who are bisexual and transgender)
  • Disabled women, rainbow/takatāpui (especially people who are bisexual and transgender) wāhine Māori, and young women are the most likely to be subjected to family violence.

Is it an emergency?

Is there an immediate, imminent, or ongoing risk:

  • to life or property
  • of a serious offence or incident occurring OR
  • a serious offence/incident is occurring or has occurred.
