Fatal crash, Cambridge Road, Waipa

One person has died after a crash involving a truck and car on Cambridge Road in Waipa.

Emergency services were called to the scene, between Storey and Cox roads, about 11.25am.

Despite the best efforts of first responders, the driver of the car died at the scene.

Police are providing support to the person’s family.

The section of Cambridge Road remains closed and the Serious Crash Unit is carrying out a scene examination.

Police used 111 calls to track a fleeing driver, who was arrested after allegedly crashing into two innocent motorists at Ōhaupō yesterday.

Inspector Hywel Jones, Waikato Acting District Commander praised the multiple people who called 111 to report a vehicle’s dangerous driving.

Police formally identify man found deceased in Waikato River

Police have formally identified a man located deceased in a car in the Waikato River last year.

He was Michael Murdoch, aged 44, from Ngāruawāhia, who had been missing since September 2019.

Michael’s body was found in his car in the Waikato River on 13 August 2024, by a company which removes wrecked cars and other hazardous materials from the river.

Formally identifying Michael was a complex and lengthy process, due to having been in the river for a significant period of time.

Man arrested after incident in Tahuna last night

Waikato Police have arrested and charged a 22-year-old following a serious, violent incident in Tahuna.

At around 7.20pm, Police were alerted to a group of people fighting on Tahuna-Ohinewai Road after a person who confronted three men in a vehicle doing burnouts was assaulted and other members of the public attempted to intervene.

After noticing the incident unfolding, an occupant of a nearby property has attempted to intervene. However, they were also assaulted by the alleged offenders.

Drugs, firearm found in Waihi warrants

Waikato Police uncovered methamphetamine, cannabis, a firearm, ammunition and a homemade taser during search warrants in Waihi yesterday.

Police, including the Armed Offenders Squad and drug detector dogs, executed the two search warrants in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Drugs, drug paraphernalia, firearms and ammunition, stolen property and a homemade taser were found. A firearm was also found in a concealed cavity in a wall.

“We see the harm that drug dealing causes to our communities daily,” says Inspector Mike Henwood.

Fatal Crash, Te Aroha

Police can confirm one person has died following a crash in Te Aroha this afternoon.

The two-vehicle crash on Stanley Road South was reported just before 1:40pm.

One person died at the scene, a second person was seriously injured and a further two people sustained moderate injuries.

The road has since reopened.

Body found following fire, Waihi

One person has been found deceased following a fire this morning in Waihi.

At around 7:50am emergency services received reports of a fire on Montrose Road.

Police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand investigators are carrying out a scene examination.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Name release, fatal crash, Waikoha Road

Police are now in the position to release the name of the man who died following a crash on Waikoha Road on 30 May.

He was 30-year-old Shaun Timothy Rich, from Te Pahu.

Police extends our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
